    Wahoos Volunteer Opportunity

    Hello Wahoo Parents,

As we start to gear up for warmer weather and the Wahoos swim season, we would like to encourage you to consider getting certified as a Stroke and Turn Judge. The key function of the Stroke and Turn Judge is to make sure that our meets are conducted in a fair manner in which the technical rules of swimming are followed by each participant. This is a critical volunteer role at our meets and does require training/certification prior to the season. Please note that this is an annual certification requirement so all returning Stroke and Turn Judges must re-certify as well.

If you are interested in becoming Stroke and Turn Judge certified, we are hosting a training/certification specific to parents from our team. The training will be conducted by our trio of Meet Refs. This training will be on Tuesday May 23 at 7:30pm at Laurie Abplanalp’s home (8235 Lodgepole Trail, Lone Tree, CO 80124). If you are interested in attending this training, please email Laurie at [email protected].

If you are unable to attend that training session but are still interested in certification this summer, the league is hosting a few training sessions as well. If you plan to attend one of these sessions, please sign up for a league training – League Stroke and Turn Judge Training

    • Thursday May 4th – 6-8pm – Castle Rock Library
    • Wednesday May 10th – 6-8pm – Stroh Ranch Creekside Rec Center
    • Thursday May 18th – 6-8pm – Highlands Ranch Library
    • Wednesday May 31st – 6-8pm – Koelbel Library

In addition to the classroom training, we would like to offer a practical training opportunity at practice on Friday May 26th from 5:30-6:30pm at Cook Creek. This is not required, but we thought that it might be helpful to see swimmers conduct strokes and turns and we can point out what constitutes a violation. No need to sign up, just show up!

If you have previously complete at least one season as a Stroke and Turn Judge, there is also an opportunity to become a Starter – the person that says “Take your mark” and starts each race. Should you have interest in that, please sign up for a league training - Starter Training.

If you should have any questions about these volunteer positions, please feel free to reach out to Laurie – [email protected].
